As Keystone Asphalt LLC, we are proud to be one of the leading providers of asphalt paving and concrete services in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. We have been serving our customers with integrity, honesty, and unsurpassed workmanship quality for over 20 years. We always strive to deliver a superior finished product with a long service life that fits your budget.

But we are not satisfied with just being good at what we do. We want to be better. That is why we are constantly investing in research and development (R&D) to improve our materials, methods, and technologies. We believe that R&D is the key to innovation, sustainability, and customer satisfaction.

In this blog post, we want to share with you some of the exciting R&D projects that we are currently working on or planning to implement in the near future. These projects are aimed at enhancing the performance, durability, and environmental friendliness of our asphalt pavements.

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA)

Warm mix asphalt (WMA) is a type of asphalt mix that is produced and placed at lower temperatures than conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA). WMA has several benefits over HMA, such as:

  • Reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Improved workability and compaction
  • Extended paving season and haul distance
  • Enhanced resistance to moisture damage and thermal cracking
  • Improved air quality and worker safety

We have been experimenting with various WMA technologies, such as chemical additives, foaming agents, and organic waxes, to find the optimal mix of design and production parameters for our projects. We have also been collaborating with local agencies and universities to evaluate the field performance and long-term behavior of WMA pavements. So far, the results have been promising, and we are confident that WMA will become a viable alternative to HMA in the near future.

Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP)

Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) is the term used for the reclaimed and processed material obtained from old asphalt pavements. RAP can be reused as an aggregate or binder in new asphalt mixes, reducing the need for virgin materials and landfill space. RAP has several advantages, such as:

  • Lower cost and higher availability
  • Conserved natural resources and reduced waste
  • Improved rutting and fatigue resistance
  • Increased stiffness and stability

We have been using RAP in our asphalt mixes for many years, and we have developed a comprehensive quality control and assurance program to ensure the consistency and performance of our RAP mixes. We have also been exploring the use of higher RAP contents, up to 40%, in our mixes, as well as the use of rejuvenators, such as oils, polymers, and bio-based materials, to restore the aged and oxidized binder in RAP. We have been conducting laboratory and field tests to assess the impact of these factors on the mechanical and rheological properties of our RAP mixes.

Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt (CRMA)

Crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) is a type of asphalt binder that is blended with crumb rubber, which is derived from waste tires. CRMA has several benefits over conventional asphalt binder, such as:

  • Increased elasticity and flexibility
  • Enhanced resistance to cracking, rutting, and raveling
  • Reduced noise and splash and spray
  • Improved skid resistance and friction

We have been using CRMA in our asphalt mixes for selected projects, such as high-traffic and high-stress roads, bridges, and airport runways. We have been employing various CRMA technologies, such as wet process, dry process, and terminal blend, to optimize the performance and cost-effectiveness of our CRMA mixes. We have also been monitoring the field performance and durability of our CRMA pavements, as well as the environmental and health impacts of CRMA production and application.

Conclusion

These are just some of the R&D projects that we are currently working on or planning to implement in the near future. We are always looking for new ways to improve our products and services and to meet the changing needs and expectations of our customers. We are committed to providing you with the best asphalt paving and concrete services in the region, and we hope that you will continue to support us and trust us with your projects.
